Harpephyllum caffrum-Kaffir Plum-Also called the South African plum. Small evergreen tree, 15 to 30 feet tall (4.5-9 m); grayish bark; bright green, alternate, pinnate, leaves, 9 to 13 sickle-shaped shiny leaflets, hairy when young, each up to 3 inches long (7.5 cm). The branches are brittle in heavy winds and it can withstand mild to moderate frosts. Constant temperatures below 30 degrees F will cause damage. Can be grown as a Bonsai!
The small, oval shaped, dark red fruit has a nice, sweet and tart-acid flavour, about 3cm long, with a thin skin, follow the flowers from summer to fall. Fruits are eaten fresh or used in jellies. With their sweet and sour taste, they are also good to make wine.
