From his coconut husk hilltop Gilbert Gooney Bird Bamboo Chime surveys his domain, his head bobbing up and down in the wind while a complement of hand-tuned bamboo chimes emit a mellow melody of tones. This fanciful hand-made chime is made from an array of natural materials. His body and tail are made from the coarse outer husk of a coconut shell with long coconut fibers serving as feather, natural fiber twine are used for knees, ankles and feet while a hand-carved and painted vulture-like head tops his bamboo-jointed neck. The Gilbert chime hangs approximately 40" long in total length and his body measures approximately 14" x 10". Hand-made in Bali. Every Asli Arts chime features the mellow, earth-inspired tones unique to resonating bamboo tubes. Each Woodstock chime is hand-tuned by a trained artist-musician who whittles each tube to the perfect pitch, repeatedly tapping each bamboo tube as he carves until the sound is just right. Then our artisans select a range of tube sizes that when combined and touched by gentle breezes, create a deep resonating sound. Bamboo tubes emit notes based on size, large tubes produce lower tones and smaller tubes emit higher-pitched sounds. By hand-tuning each tube, then selecting a range of sizes, each chime produces a melody unique to itself.
