Sundials were important and useful tools for more than a thousand years before clocks were invented. Even after the introduction of the first pendulum clock in 1656, sundials remained popular in the colonies for their utility and decorative style. This detailed sundial is based on a brass original in the Colonial Williamsburg collections, made during the early 18th century in London by W. Collier. It fits on a variety of stands and makes an elegant ornament in today's garden.
