The Bird of Paradise is a spectacular and exotic tropical plant native to South Africa. Bird of Paradise plants produce great numbers of exotic flowers several times a year. These spectacular, large, complex flowers, up to 10 inches or more have striking orange white plumes with midnight blue beaks and are very long lasting. Each stem has 4 flowers so carefully split the green beak to release them. The leaves are also showy with a pale blue-gray underside. These are the flowers and leaves used in floral arrangements. This unique perennial can take light frost and is also fairly drought tolerant. Hardy in zone 8 or above but can be grown in containers indoors with sufficient light. The plant looks it best when fertilized and watered frequently and make a great companion plant to orchids.
No special skills are needed to grow them and they are very tolerant of maltreatment. They are very fast growing.
